High Beeches Tea Room at High Beeches Gardens
The Victorian Farm Buildings at High Beeches have been carefully restored, and converted to contain a licensed restaurant, with open loggia and tea lawn. In 1966, High Beeches Farm consisted of housing for five coaches, with harness room and kitchen, four large loose boxes for the carriage horses, and two rooms for the grooms to sleep in. There was also a large barn, which had stalls for eight cows, an open fronted 'Hovel' where the cattle were fed, and a walled yard, where they were kept in the winter. The Cow Barn has become a very pretty tea room, with access to the loggia and Tea Lawn, with a rustic fountain. There is some adventurous planting around the lawn, including a Loquat Tree, a Banana, a red New Zealand Flax, the honey scented Euphorbia mellifera which is native to Madeira and many more unusual and exotic plants The Clock and Tower, with its conspicuous spire, has also been restored. The clock was installed in 1928, to remind Colonel Loder, who was the owner then of his Derby winner, Spion Kop. The clock has kept time continuously, stopping only for a few months in 2001, for essential repairs. The Tea Room opens at 11.30pm, daily, except Wednesdays, all year, serving freshly prepared lunches and teas. Access is from the High Beeches Gardens Car Park, and is free. The tea room is accessible to disabled people, but wheelchair users please enquire at the Gate Lodge. Coaches and groups are welcome by appointment please.
